It was 2013...
The word "selfie" was added to the dictionary... Tom Clancy, Nelson Mandela, and Margaret Thatcher died. I always liked Margaret Thatcher. I'm not even sure if I would agree with all her politics, because I didn't follow them all that closely, since I'm not British, but she blazed a new trail and did it in a historically unprecedented Cold War era where the mere existence of the world wasn't necessarily assured from day to day... but I digress... The Boston Marathon bombing, Edward Snowden, the Pope joined Twitter, that one mayor went crazy and smoked crack in a video or something like that, the Geico camel made his first appearance "Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike"... and I wrote my first book...
I'd always wanted to write a novel... so I did. At the time I had an idea for a trilogy of books (now I have 30-50 synopsis written up/laid out) and I just sat down one day and started typing. When I first started I didn't even really look for any help, or read articles about writing books, or anything like that. I just started putting words onto pages. Rex Chase (originally titled Ma'iitso Rises) came together in about six weeks. I edited and edited and read it and re-read it dozens of times over the course of the next month or so and then went about getting it published. I've learned a lot since then, but that was certainly a process.
For me, and I actually hesitate writing this, but for me, it isn't necessarily about the writing. Its about the creation of it all. I love creating new worlds and new characters and getting them into and out of trouble... whatever I can dream up. The writing itself can often get a bit tedious, especially as I've learned/been taught to analyze my phrasing, not use adverbs (my original copy editor took me from something like 15,000 adverbs in my first draft of Ma'iitso Rises to a few hundred), and pay attention to all the various conventions copy editors wish you to follow.
I put out three novels in 2013, 2014, and 2015, then co-wrote three more with my 8th grade advanced Social Studies class in 2016, 2017, and 2018. My focus in recent months has been more on the music side of things, but who knows when another book might come out. I have plenty to write about and lots of great adventures just waiting in the wings.
